“This can’t be it,” with a sigh, Grace closed the final grimoire in front of her. “Intention Hexes aren’t even that awful. Why isn’t there a loophole?”

“Magic often doesn’t have loopholes,” Ivy said solemnly. “Years ago, I hexed two of my husband’s wolves into invisibility to protect us. I didn’t have time to brew a potion, so I did what I had to. Things went wrong, and those poor men were stuck with only each other for,” she paused and bit her lip. “For quite some time.”

Six hours since lunch, and the women had absolutely nothing. Tanner waited in the living room, the hex dragging him closer when he likely rather stayed in the safe house. Ivy’s house held more protections than half the city combined, which made it safe enough for a few hours. The vampires wouldn’t attack a High Priestess, they knew their place in the hierarchy and wouldn’t survive.

“So, this is it?” Grace hadn’t meant to snarl but had. “Either I die, Tanner dies, or Bastian and the clan do.” Blowing out a breath, she leaned back on the sturdy wooden chair.

“It sounds like it,” Deidre placed her hand on Grace’s shoulder. “I understand you want Tanner to feel in control of his life, but this is an impossible task.”

“Necromancy only goes so far,” Lita nodded in agreement. “It’s not as simple as killing you or Tanner for a few moments. You’d be dead. Period.”

Before Supernaturals were outed in the world, vast myths started on the powers creatures could wield. Necromancy was perhaps the most misunderstood talent. Yes, the dead could be raised, but they didn’t remain alive. It lasted minutes, sometimes hours, if cast by one powerful enough. After that, the soul left, and the body returned to dead.

Unless there was a spell one could perform to change all that.

“If you were Lita, I’d know that look meant a fuck ton of trouble,” Ivy lifted a brow. “Does it when you do it, too?”

Grace laughed. “I’m not sure what my face did, but I’m certain you won’t like what I’m about to ask.”

“Oh, I love it!” Lita rubbed her hands together with a malicious laugh. “For the record, your eyebrows sort of shot up to your forehead, your eyes got a mischievous little sparkle, and your lips set in a smirk. I do it a lot.” She beamed.

“Well, then, ask for it.” Ivy groaned.

“There have been rumors about latent magic and hidden spells, like the Grecian commands. I’ve mastered a few of them.” Grace shook her head. “What else was found in those uncovered scrolls? How do we know what spells were found, or what we could manipulate to raise the dead for good?”

“First,” Ivy started lifting a finger, “we are not messing with darker magics, period. I’ve been there, done that, and it’s not happening. Second, as Council Elect for the United States, I’ve seen every single parchment to come from the ruins. None of them deal with death magic. Third,” another finger joined the first two, “we’re not killing you or Tanner and hoping a never before performed ritual works.
